CNN —Lawyers for E. Jean Carroll have asked a federal appeals court to expedite Donald Trump’s appeal of the verdict in their first trial in which a jury awarded Carroll $5 million in damages after finding Trump liable for defamation and battery in May 2023. The motion with the 2nd US Circuit Court of Appeals filed Tuesday cites Trump’s numerous attempts to delay both trials with Carroll as a signal that he’s likely to drag out the appeal. The jury in the second trial held in January determined Trump should pay Carroll $83.3 million in damages for defaming her. Her lawyers also asked the appeals court to consider the author’s progressing age. Carroll is an 80-year-old woman who has struggled mightily to obtain justice for almost five years,” the filing says.

Wilmington, Delaware CNN —The federal judge overseeing Hunter Biden’s gun case in Delaware refused on Tuesday to delay the June 3 trial date despite pleas from lawyers for the president’s son who said they would not be prepared in time. “I trust everyone can get done what needs to be done,” US District Judge Maryellen Noreika said during a status conference in Wilmington. Hunter Biden’s lawyer Abbe Lowell argued the defense team would not be able to accomplish all that needs to be done in under three weeks. “I don’t need to be your scheduling secretary,” Noreika said, telling Lowell to work out new filing deadlines with the prosecution ahead of the trial date. Tuesday’s decision from the judge came after Hunter Biden’s latest attempts to throw out the case were rejected in back-to-back rulings last week from the 3rd US Circuit Court of Appeals and Noreika.

A group of TikTok creators, including a rancher, a skin care entrepreneur and a promoter of biblical literacy, sued the federal government on Tuesday over a new law that would force the app’s Chinese owner, ByteDance, to sell the company or face a ban in the United States. They said it violated their First Amendment rights. TikTok said it was paying the legal fees for the creators’ lawsuit. CNN —The Georgia Court of Appeals will consider an effort by Donald Trump and his co-defendants to disqualify District Attorney Fani Willis from the 2020 election subversion case. In a brief order Wednesday, the court said it will hear the appeal from Trump and others challenging the ruling from Judge Scott McAfee that allowed Willis to remain on the case. No trial date has been set in the sprawling election subversion conspiracy case against Trump, and the decision to consider the appeal is another sign that pre-trial efforts to delay a trial are succeeding. Tuesday, a federal judge in Florida indefinitely postponed Trump’s trial on mishandling classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate. Willis testified that she paid Wade back for the expenses in cash.

New York CNN —A group of 13 conservative US federal judges are vowing to not hire Columbia University law students or undergraduates because of how the school has handled pro-Palestinian demonstrations on its campus in recent weeks. “As judges who hire law clerks every year to serve in the federal judiciary, we have lost confidence in Columbia as an institution of higher education. CNN has reached out to Columbia University for comment. They typically hire law school graduates for clerkships that can eventually lead to high-paying and prestigious jobs. If not, employers are forced to assume the risk that anyone they hire from Columbia may be one of these disruptive and hateful students,” the judges wrote.

If it loses, TikTok could be banned from US app stores unless its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, sells the app to a non-Chinese entity by mid-January 2025. But Virginia Democratic Sen. Mark Warner, an advocate for the TikTok legislation, said in remarks on the Senate floor in April that the briefings provided critical insight into the risk TikTok poses. US policymakers have described the law at issue as a forced divestiture of TikTok, not an outright app ban. Some US officials have been trying to ban TikTok from the United States since 2020, when former President Donald Trump moved to block the app by executive order. (Trump has since reversed his position, saying a TikTok ban would only help Meta, a company Trump blames for his 2020 election defeat.)
